A name can be given to you, or it can be earned, like Ern Keys.

What you do with that name is something entirely different.

Your choices, experiences, mistakes, growth, discipline, creativity, and the way you move through the world eventually begin adding meaning to the name people know you by.

For Mansfield, Ohio artist Ern Keys, music has been part of that journey since childhood.

On Thursday, August 20th at 8 PM EST, Ern Keys joins The People’s Podcast for How I Ern My Name, a conversation that goes beyond the songs to explore the person, perspective, experiences, and creative process behind the artist.

ERN KEYS: BEFORE THE ARTIST

Born and raised in Mansfield, Ohio, Ern Keys began his relationship with music at only eight years old.

He started by learning piano and drums.

By 13, he wasn’t simply learning how to play music anymore. He was writing and recording his own.

There is a difference between enjoying music and becoming curious about how music is actually created.

The beat.

The words.

The timing.

The emotion.

The way different sounds can completely change what a listener feels.

For Ern Keys, that curiosity started early, creating the foundation for the artist he would eventually become.

ERN KEYS: FINDING YOUR OWN SOUND

Finding your sound doesn’t necessarily mean choosing one flow and staying there.

Sometimes finding your sound means becoming comfortable enough to experiment.

Ern Keys incorporates his everyday experiences and personal perspective into his music while experimenting with different flows, cadences, and sounds.

Some music makes you think.

Some makes you move.

Some simply creates a vibe.

An artist doesn’t always have to choose between them.

Creativity gives an artist the freedom to explore, change, and discover what works.

As Ern Keys grows, his sound has the freedom to grow with him.

THE OLD FILES STILL TELL THE STORY OF ERN KEYS

Growth becomes easier to recognize when you can look back at where you started.

Ern Keys’ catalog includes projects such as Mr. Keys (Old Files) and Mob Squad (Old Music), both released in 2020.

Even those titles tell part of the story.

Old files.

Old music.

Past versions of an artist preserved through sound.

Those recordings don’t lose their value simply because an artist develops.

They become part of the timeline.

They show where Ern Keys was creatively, what he was experimenting with, and who he was becoming.

Every stage doesn’t have to represent who you are today to have played a role in getting you here.

Sometimes looking backward is exactly how you recognize how far you’ve come.

ERN KEYS FINDS A WAY

In 2024, Ern Keys released Find a Way.

Even the title creates a conversation.

Life rarely gives us a perfectly mapped route.

Sometimes there isn’t an obvious answer.

Sometimes the resources aren’t there.

Sometimes what you’re trying to build hasn’t caught up with the vision you can already see.

That’s when finding a way becomes more than a phrase.

It becomes part of the process.

For independent artists, creating music isn’t only about stepping in front of a microphone.

There’s writing.

Recording.

Production.

Promotion.

Learning.

Networking.

Experimenting.

Failing.

Trying again.

And continuing to create when nobody can guarantee where the journey will lead.

Sometimes you simply have to find a way.

ERN KEYS: OUT THE STRUGGLE

Later in 2024 came Out The Struggle, produced by J Money and Ern Keys.

Again, the title opens a larger conversation.

What does it mean to create from your experiences without allowing those experiences to permanently define you?

Artists have always used music to document where they’ve been.

The struggle can become a lyric.

A memory can become a verse.

An experience can become a beat.

Something lived privately can become something another person hears and recognizes within themselves.

That’s one of the unique things about music.

Ern Keys may be telling his story, while someone listening hears pieces of their own.

ERN KEYS: LEARNING MORE THAN HOW TO MAKE A SONG

Ern Keys is now studying audio production, expanding his understanding of what happens beyond writing and performing.

That adds another layer to his development as an artist.

There is the artist who hears the finished song.

Then there is the producer who begins hearing all the individual pieces required to create it.

How should this sound?

Where should the vocals sit?

What needs to be louder?

What needs space?

What emotion should the production create before the listener even processes the lyrics?

Understanding audio production gives Ern Keys another way to participate in shaping his own sound.

It moves creativity beyond performing music into understanding how that music is built.

And when an artist understands both sides, there are even more possibilities for what they can create.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR ERN KEYS TO ERN HIS NAME?

That’s where the title of this conversation becomes important.

How I Ern My Name.

A name can represent much more than what appears on a birth certificate or streaming profile.

A name develops a reputation.

People begin connecting it with your work.

Your consistency.

Your character.

Your creativity.

Your choices.

Your growth.

And what you contribute.

You don’t earn your name once.

You continue earning what that name represents every time you put something into the world.

For an artist, every release becomes another piece of that reputation.

Every lesson adds something.

Every experience adds something.

Every stage of growth adds another chapter.

That’s how a name becomes more than something you’re called.

It’s how you Ern your name.

MANSFIELD MATTERS: THE ROOTS OF ERN KEYS

There is something meaningful about creating from the place that raised you.

For Ern Keys, that’s Mansfield, Ohio.

Mansfield isn’t simply a location attached to his biography.

It’s part of the environment that helped shape his experiences and perspective.

We often hear about artists after the world knows their names.

We hear the finished records.

We see the polished performances.

We celebrate the accomplishments.

What we don’t always see is everything that happened before that recognition arrived.

The child learning instruments.

The teenager recording music.

The early songs.

The experimentation.

The mistakes.

The growth.

The person continuing to learn while building something that may eventually become much bigger than where it started.

There is value in talking to artists while they’re still building.

Because the journey deserves to be heard too.

THE PERSON BEHIND ERN KEYS

That’s what The People’s Podcast wants to explore.

Not simply:

What song are you promoting?

We want to know the person behind the music.

Who are you?

What shaped you?

Why did you begin creating?

How has your sound changed?

What have your experiences taught you?

What does studying audio production allow you to understand differently?

What does being an artist from Mansfield mean to you?

Where are you trying to take your music next?

And ultimately—

What does it mean to Ern your name?

Because sometimes understanding the artist requires listening to more than the music.

You have to hear the story too.
